Hi there! The department of Orne, in Normandy, has an incredible nature! So I wanted to enjoy Autumn and went to Bagnoles de l’Orne! It’s located in the Andaines forest and is an ideal place to get away from stress and spend a lovely moment far from any pollution.
Bagnoles de l’Orne: tourism in the town center
Where to start to visit Bagnoles de l’Orne? First of all, I invite you to stroll down the main street (called Rue des Casinos) and its few shops. If its buildings aren’t all that pretty, you’m sure you’ll still enjoy wandering in a small countryside town. I advise you to make a small detour through the Sacré Cœur Church, and have a look around the neighborhood. You’ll discover lovely houses from the ‘Belle Epoque’! The few steps to get there are worth it! At the end of the main street, you’ll find a park with beautiful fall foliage colours, and the casino of Bagnoles de l’Orne. The park is relatively large, so you can wander inside for a while.
Bagnoles de l’Orne thermal baths and spa
From the park, you can reach the various spa and thermal baths from the path which is situated below Professor Louvel street.
The baths, let’s talk about them! The town is famous for its spa and baths, because its water is full of oligo-elements as it travelled along time inside earth. This water is supposed to have virtues, especially for the treatment of diseases associated with rheumatology, phlebology and gynecology. I didn’t have a chance to enjoy a treatment myself, but the Hotel des Thermes is worth the detour even for its architecture only.
The castle and its park
After the baths, continue on the main road and turn right at the roundabout to take the ‘Avenue du Docteur Joly’. A little further on the right you’ll arrive at the park and the castel of Bagnoles de l’Orne. As you can imagine the park is splendid in autumn with its colourful foliage. The castle, which is also the town hall of Bagnoles de l’Orne was built between 1855 and 1859. The little extra? It’s located in the heights of town, which means you can enjoy at the same time a nice panorama over the surroundings!
Hotels in Bagnoles de l’Orne for every budget
As I said above, you’ll find spas and a number of hotels in Bagnoles de l’Orne. I have prepared below a list to help you in your search:
- B’O Resort & Spa : which is located in the center of a park, with a swimming pool and well-being space;
- Le Manoir du Lys: with its design rooms and swimming pools;
- Hôtel Normandie: simple and elegant. I enjoyed my lunch there, and its traditional cuisine was simply delicious;
- Le Contact Hotel: which is modern and welcoming;
- Le Roc au chien: if you’d like to spend a night in an elegant and old building from the 19th century;
- If you’re traveling with your family, you’ll also find housing accommodations, such as Bruyere d’Andaine or le Four-Bedroom Holiday Home;
- And if your budget is more limited, l’Hôtel Pension Bellevue looks really good and many travelers seemed to enjoy their stay there;
Things to do nearby
Do you like hiking? I really advise you to go to La Roche d’Oëtre! Even if I went there in the middle of summer, as you will see in the dedicated article, you can easily imagine what the landscape might look like with Autumn foliage!
The town of Domfront is also full of charm and only 20 minutes by car, or 1h if you decide to go by bike 🙂
