Mont Orgueil – discover Gorey castle in Jersey

Hello! To protect the Anglo-Norman island from French barbarians (like me), it was necessary to build several castles around Jersey. I already told you about Elizabeth Castle, which is in St Helier, now let’s talk about Mont Orgueil, which is located in Gorey in the east side of the island. Really right in front of Normandy!

Prepare your visit to Mont Orgueil castle?

First, before your visit, I invite you to download the audio guide. It will be useful for you throughout the visit to learn more about the castle’s history. It’s only available in English but after all, if you read this you should be able to understand the whole audio tour too!

What can I tell you already about the history of the castle in a few words? It was built at the beginning of the 13th century to protect Jersey from the Frenchies. It’s therefore a medieval castle, built with granite, the local stone, although its appearance has changed over the centuries. Mont Orgueil had several type of guests: from a British secret service agent, to Queen Victoria and German troops. But it’s now exclusive for tourists, for our greatest pleasure!

What to discover during the visit?

I especially enjoyed the view from the highest tower! It offers, indeed, a superb panorama on Gorey, its harbour which looks different according to the tides, and its bay. And above all, if you look on the east side of the castle, Normandy’s coast is everywhere! I also loved the secret rooms of the castle, like the witch room, and the “paintings” of Queen Elizabeth that seem to follow you depending on your movements! I won’t tell you more to let you discover the castle by yourself.

Are you going to Mont Orgueil, or perhaps you have already visited it? Please tell me your thoughts in the comments!

Boujou (the Norman way to say XOXO)
