Normandy is made up of five departments including Calvados. It is the most famous one as its name is also a typical drink of the region.
It was also in this area of France that William the Conqueror grew up before setting off to conquer England. Its beaches are also well known because of the D-day landing during World War II. Those of Arromanches or Ouistreham are my favourites. The Normandy beaches y are also popular for much happier reasons, as some are superb seaside resorts located just a few hours from Paris, the capital of France.
I therefore recommend visiting Calvados during a trip to Normandy because many of the must-see places are there.
Arromanches beach! This town was crucial during the the Second World War D-Day landings. You can even see some remnants of the artificial harbor, which is quite impressive.
Honfleur is one of the must-see town to visit in Calvados. It is full of charm and authentic with its cobbled streets and colourful harbour.
Caen, my hometown, is the perfect place to discover Normandy through its history. You’ll learn more about William the Conqueror, the Second World War but also Impressionist paintings, and so on!
